Torbay mayor Nick Bye declares the Headway Devon's South Devon centre 'open'

Torbay mayor officially opens South Devon centre

Headway Devon's latest rehabilitation centre, based in Torquay and serving Torbay and South Devon, has been officially opened by Torbay's mayor Nick Bye.

Clients, staff, volunteers, and donors will gathered at the centre, on Barton Downs in Torquay, to celebrate its official opening at 11am on Thursday 4 April.

A growing group of clients regularly attend the centre, which was opened in response to an increasing need for local brain injury rehabilitation services in the area. The group meets at the Acorn Centre, which has excellent facilities including an internet-connected computer room.

A spokesperson for Headway Devon said: "Brain injuries can be caused by physical trauma - in a car accident or as a result of an assault - or by illnesses such as meningitis or brain tumours. They can have a devastating effect on people's lives, causing an array of physical and psychological challenges.

"Brain injuries often remain hidden from view - they are still there after the scars of the physical injury have healed. This makes it even more difficult to raise awareness of brain injuries and get to a point where people understand why it is important to provide support for people affected.

"It is good news for Torbay that we are opening a support centre for adults with brain injuries. But we are in urgent need of further funding to guarantee the centre's future - so as well as celebrating this development we are also appealing for local people and businesses to help us with our ongoing fundraising efforts."

Anyone who thinks that they or a family member could benefit from Headway Devon's services, or could help with fundraising, should call 01392 211822 or email info@headwaydevon.org.uk.
