Brian’s Brain Facts

As brains are Brian’s particular area of expertise, we thought he’d like to use this area of his site to share some of his knowledge.

Brain’s interesting brain facts:

  • Your brain controls EVERYTHING that you do – every single breath, wink or jump goes through the brain first
  • The average brain weighs about 3lbs, or just under 1.5Kg, making it much lighter than most other supercomputers
  • It’s a very strange and wobbly texture, like a blancmange or jelly
  • It’s a bit back-to-front – the left side of your brain controls things on the right side of your body and the right side of the brain controls things on the left side of your body
  • The brain is made up of around 100 billion nerve cells and even more support cells, and unlike the cells in just about every other part of our bodies, these ones can’t repair themselves when damaged
  • We use 100% of our brains (You might have heard the myth that we sometimes only use 10% of our brains – that’s not true. If I were to come along and remove a chunk of your brain, it would make a difference!)

Sciencey stuff (for boffins):

  • The brain, or cerebral cortex, is divided into two different halves – the right and left hemisphere
  • These hemispheres are divided down further into different areas called lobes or cortices and each of these areas has its own different role
  • Your brain is connected to your spinal cord (and the central nervous system) by the brain stem
  • The cerebral cortex is the largest part of your brain. It contains the frontal lobes, the motor cortex, sensory cortex and parietal lobes
